New Customer Acquisition Tips For Your Business

July 29th, 2010

It probably won’t surprise you when I say that customers are the most important aspect of every business.  That said, every business, of every size, takes steps toward new customer acquisition, whether they know it or not.  Whether your business is large or small, learn the mistakes that you may be making that’s keeping your customers away.

1. Don’t set your marketing budget free: There are many managers and business owners who are under the impression that advertising is like any other investment–it’s money that will almost always come back to you in the end.  The only problem is that you won’t always necessarily get a perfect return.  Your new customer acquisition could be severly damaged, or at least inhibited, by not holding your advertising and your marketing accountable for the customers it brings in.

2. Test: Increasingly, there are more and more marketing venues which will allow you or your business to track the effectiveness of the efforts and the resources you’ve put in–it is always wise to use these resources.  While using the metrics and tracking your advertising offers will not bring in new customers actively, it will reduce the amoutn you are spending to gain customers.  Even businesses who use less conventionally measureable tactics (like radio or television) can still, with a bit of thought, determine ways to track their overall effectiveness.

3. Be flexible: New customers aren’t everything.  There is a school of thought which states that an exclusively “new customer” strategy can damage relationships with existing customers.  Rewarding and building loyalty for your extant customers, for some businesses, can be just the right solution for weathering a difficult time.

4. Walk in your customers’ shoes:  Whether you’re engaged in a marketing campaign for a while, or not, there are a number of paths which customers can travel on the way to buying from your business, whether it be placing a phone call, visiting a website, or entering a physical location.  It is important to know these pathways which your customers are taking.  Be aware of how customers may be using your website to make purchases, or whether there may be challenges in using your business’s automated phone system.  Knowing about these potential obstacles in advance can significantly advance your ability to acquire new customers.

Every business out there knows something about new customer acquisition, from signage to online advertising.  A little strategy, and a bit of consideration can improve any business, as well, bringing in additional customers, and improving your bottom line.
